Illegal to make a fake Facebook profile?

Category : Crime, Legal

To the pranksters out there, if you’re thinking about making a fake Facebook profile, you might want to think again.  A New Jersey woman is currently the subject of an indictment accusing her of using a fake Facebook account to slander her ex-boyfriend. Dana Thorton is alleged to have created a fake Facebook profile in the name of her ex-boyfriend and posting status updates that would tell the public he used illicit drugs, frequented prostitutes, and contracted an STD.

The charges revolve around a New Jersey law that prohibits individuals from impersonating another for the purpose of “injur[ing] or defraud[ing].” In this case, the comments damaged the reputation of the ex-boyfriend who was a narcotics detective for the State of New Jersey. The fact that the impersonation occurred online in the not so serious social networking arena made no difference according to the judge presiding over the matter.

Lesson to be learned, if you want to talk trash, ditch Facebook and do it the old fashion way!
