About
While my background is in law (J.D./LL.M.), I have a diverse set of interests that are not so mundane. I love traveling to different countries and experiencing the uniqueness of varying cultures. While reading up on a country’s history may suffice some, I believe a visit to the actual ruins we often read about is more fulfilling. My interest in how people live in different parts of the world might be the cause of my fascination with global geopolitical events. There is so much more to what exists outside our own little world that if we just open our eyes, hearts, and minds, we may be able to learn and reap a benefit.
I tend to believe that there is more than what meets the eye, especially when it comes to news reporting. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but more often than not there is usually some hidden element never spoken of that is the influential factor. It’s like the proverbial elephant in the room that everyone knows is there but chooses, for whatever reason, to ignore. I believe there are always two sides to a story and I always find myself more interested in the side untold.
I am fascinated by language and the power of the written word. I am intrigued even more so by those who have the uncanny ability to speak these words in such a fashion that they seemingly obtain whatever they wish. It is no coincidence that the most powerful people just so happen to have the natural gift of gab. In politics, it’s Barack Obama. In the courtroom, it’s (or was) Johnnie Cochran. In television, it’s Oprah. In music, it’s Eminem. Even in the gutter, you will find that those who are able to speak words convincingly can amass great influence and power over others – how else do you explain the effectiveness of pimps?
And that is sort of the reason why I chose to start this blog. I believe the media knows fully well the power of language and takes full advantage of it in its reports. It adopts a doom and gloom attitude and uses it to inflict fear into the public. Why else is it that almost every story reported has some horribly negative connotation? If it’s not some story warning you that the end is near, it’s some mindless gossip on who Snooki from the Jersey Shore is dating (and on headline news…are you serious?). Many simply refuse to watch the news and I can’t really blame them.
So I hope I can come to the rescue by writing some thoughtful articles that might also put a smile on your face…
